2 months agoI spoke with Caroline on Friday briefly and immediately felt Like her, only objective was to get money. We didn't have a chance really to discuss my case, which is what consultations are for. She told me to call again on monday to speak with her after she took the weekend to think about the money aspect of my case, as I'm a single mother of 3. Who's being financially strangled by the opposing party. She was aware that I have put in a motion to the judge for suit money. So I called for the schedule consultation. That was supposed to be with her, but she passed me on to somebody else.With specific instructions to only discuss the retainer, and not actually discuss my case. I get that everybody has to make money, but when you make the entire phone call about money and not about the actual case, it's very discouraging. A consultation is supposed to be about the case. And then you follow up with what your retainer fee is.And if they want to hire you, you don't start off with that.

2 months agoMy experience with Carolyn Janzen at Rugged Law was severely disappointing. I retained Ms. Janzen for a family law matter and terminated the representation in less than 48 hours because I lost confidence in the representation I was receiving. One of my primary concerns was that my $14,000 retainer check was deposited before I ever signed an engagement agreement or fee agreement. That immediately raised concerns for me. After ending the representation, I was charged over $1,000 for what I believe amounted to approximately one meeting and photocopying of my documents. I disputed the charges, requested that the invoice be revised, and attempted to resolve the matter directly. I was unable to reach a resolution, so I filed a complaint and fee dispute with the Oregon State Bar. My understanding is that she chose not to participate in the fee dispute process. I also became uncomfortable with the repeated discussions about the firm's use of AI in legal work and ultimately decided this firm was not the right fit for me. I cannot recommend this firm based on my experience. I encourage anyone considering hiring Rugged Law to carefully review the fee agreement before paying a retainer, ask detailed questions about billing practices, and make sure they are completely comfortable with the representation before proceeding.
